Design Thinking and Growth Mindset

A drawing self-portrait in the mirror without removing the pencil from the paper.

I used to make many self-portraits in graduate school, so I felt connected to this activity. I kept my pencil on the paper the whole time, which helped me stay aware of my hand movements and follow the drawing as it developed.

What went well?

This felt familiar and personal to me. The continuous line helped me stay focused and made the drawing feel direct.

What could have gone better?

I started with my eyebrows and then moved on to my facial details. When I moved to my hair and my face outline, I lost track of the drawing. It may have worked better to start at the top of my head, even though that is not the usual starting point.

What other knowledge or experiences does this remind you of?

It reminded me of the self-portrait work I created in graduate school. It also highlighted that having a strategy and developing it is the most important starting point.

What other strategies might you use next time to get better results?

Next time, I would start with my hair and the top of my head, or with my neckline or shoulders. I want to see if that helps me map my face and connect each facial detail in order and place the features more accurately.
